CO Gamma - Success with CAR

CO Gamma Pi Phis made such a significant impact on a third grade classroom at Cache La Poudra Elementary that the teacher wrote them a lengthy thank you letter.  She complimented the 19 women who participated in CAR in their organized approach and for customizing their assistance to the students as needed.  Perhaps most impressive was the teacher's mention that class attendance improved while CAR in session.

Here's a little video to get you fired up for convention!  Hope to see you there!

WY Alpha's Fraternity Day of Service

Megan, from WY Alpha, sent me this fun photo of their FD of S shirts which were worn around campus, including a school on campus grounds, as they promoted literacy.  They also decorated book plates.  Nice job WY Alpha!

Fraternity Day of Service at Mill Creek Elementary

I mentioned I was working on my own Fraternity Day of Service celebration at my son's school in Mill Creek, WA.  I met with the school librarian last month to introduce how we Pi Phis like to promote literacy and we developed a fun week long project with the kids.
She introduced speed reading and decorating book plates to the kids.  They had a week to practice speed reading and design book plates during their library time.  Today the fourth and fifth grade students had a "Show Off" event where they chose their class's fastest readers. Each student was able to choose a favorite Dr. Seuss book and read it on an over head projector (so all students could follow along).  The kids loved it and the fastest reader for each book was given a Dr. Seuss prize.

I don't have the official count, but most of the 200 bookplates I took into school have been wonderfully decorated.

A fifth grader student dressed as Cat in the Hat.  Together, we toured all the kindergarten classes to say hello and read a page or two of his fav Dr. Seuss book.  My son, Braeden is on the right.
 Reading to Kindergartners.
A brave kindergarten student reads to his class.
 Happy Birthday!
Bringing the celebration to the cafeteria.

My younger son, Jonah (who can't wait for kindergarten next year) and his signature ant (left of smiley face).
I hope all of your chapters had fun in creating successful, meaningful literacy events in honor of Dr. Seuss and our Fraternity Day of Service!

Philanthropy Accomplishments

Based upon the Chapter Contribution Report Numbers as of today:

*I would like to point out that small and large chapters were able to achieve Phi FFF and FB goals as they were creative and incorporated servant leadership (i.e. selected activities their chapters/campuses enthusiastically supported) in designing their philanthropic activities.

Foundation
The following chapters attained Pi status:
Colorado Delta - 32 members, $430
Idaho Alpha - 77 members, $946
Nevada Alpha - 96 members, $960

The following chapters attained Beta status:
Colorado Epsilon - 65 members, $1530

Congratulations on earning Pi, Beta or Phi status.  The money you have raised supports the Foundation's important work in progressing our fraternity, supporting/developing our members, and providing valuable programming and events.  Thank you to each member and chapter for working to raise money for the Foundation no matter your status achievements, every dollar counts!

The following chapters made the Firstbook Goal:
Alberta Alpha - $1354 ($294 over)
Nevada Alpha - $1920
Oregon Alpha - $4300 ($1760 over)
Washington Alpha $2725 ($865 over)
Washington Beta - $1980
Wyoming Alpha $941 ($41 over)

Thank you for raising money for Firstbook.  Aside from playing a part of recruitment and alumni activities for many chapters, you are giving underprivileged kids the gift of a book and an interest in reading.  Your time and participation in CAR or other reading programs is also greatly appreciated, as many of you know firsthand.  Many of us take it for granted, but for some kids, one on one reading time with an adult is a cherished and much needed gift.
